Baby Armie rummages through his recent favorites under the bass music umbrella. Music by Cashmere Cat, DZA, Joe Howe, Bok Bok, Kuedo, Dark0, Lido, Yung Gud, Yung Lean, and Jacques Greene. Label roll call: LuckyMe, Activia Benz, Sound Pellegrino, Night Slugs, Hyperdub, Lost Codes, Pelican Fly, and Revenue.
Douglas Mcgowan is an author, videographer, label owner, DJ, and new age music revivalist. He runs Yoga Records and Ethereal Sequence, and he curated the acclaimed compilation I Am the Center: Private Issue New Age Music in America, 1950-1990. That compilation is my favorite release of 2013, and in many ways it paved the way for projects like Gentle Daps to garner interest in 2014. So I’m elated to present Douglas as the first ever Gentle Daps guest contributor. It’s no secret that Douglas is a longtime collector of cassettes and vinyl, and for Gentle Daps V, he dug through his physical collection and digitized a handful of gems, some of which are impossibly rare. Music by Nedelle Torrisi, Vangelis, Don Slepian, Cyrille Verdeaux & Bernard Xolotl, Peter Davison, Kool Music, Woo, and more. Label roll call: Polydor, Audion, Capstone, Fortuna, Higher Octave, Arbutus, Stillpoint, and Woo Collective.
The stylings of Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Iasos and Laraaji are alive and well. This special edition of Gentle Daps spotlights the growing revival of new age music released so far in 2014. Music by Mark Barrott, A.r.t. Wilson aka Andras Fox, Gora Sou, Panabrite, Jeremy Harris, Inner Travels, Lexx, Softest, May Roosevelt, CFCF, and Les Halles. Label roll call: International Feel, Noumenal Loom, Bathetic, Quest Coast Quarterly, Twin Springs Tapes, Throne of Blood, Inner Islands, RBMA, Paper Bag, and Constellation Tatsu.
When he’s not co-managing Noumenal Loom, one of the best active tape labels around these days, Garrett Crosby is cranking out unclassifiably blissed-out saccharine productions under his Holly Waxwing alias. Based out of the tiny liberal arts college town of Montevallo, Alabama, Crosby seems to be having a great year with the label, and his own tracks keep getting better and better. I’m obliged that he stepped up to put together this sun-drenched eclectic ANTS mix, which he’s calling Holly Waxwing’s Velvet Falernum Warmup. Music by Sister Nancy, Gregory Isaacs, Douster, Dubbel Dutch, Africa Hitech, Holly Waxwing, Co La, Drew Price’s Bermuda Triangle, and Jam City.
From the Vaults is a new ANTS supplemental series spotlighting older mixes by yours truly (and perhaps the occasional guest too). Here’s a short mix I made as a sampler for Bombay Brouhaha, a vintage Bollywood disco/funk party I threw back in 2010. The party was a huge success—definitely the highlight of my short-lived foray into party promoting.
Oil your rock tumbler and light your Kongming lanterns cos Gentle Daps III is here! Music by Pino Donaggio, Robert Palmer, Linda Thompson, Level 42, K. Leimer, Sun Electric, Eurythmics, Deodato, Moebius & Roedelius, Tomita, and Roxy Music.
Cherushii is San Francisco-based DJ/producer Chelsea Faith. Her Queen of Cups EP is out now on 100% Silk. Very stoked to have her contribute this classic-meets-modern house mix for ANTS. Tunes by Sound Stream, HNNY, Kenny Larkin, WAX, Blake Baxter, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Cherushii, Rick Wade, Moodymann, Charles B, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, E-Dancer, Tom Trago, and Christian Burkhardt. Label roll call: Local Talk, Planet E, Disko B, Rush Hour, 100% Silk, Let’s Play House, Deep Vibes, KDJ, Desire, and Underground Resistance.
Ed Handley and Andy Turner were founding members of Black Dog Productions and helped pioneer IDM in the early ’90s through their various solo and group aliases. The pair has had many projects come and go over the years, but Plaid is clearly their venture of choice, since it’s the one that has remained active since the mid ’90s with a steady release schedule. Plaid will drop Reachy Prints, their first proper album in over two years, on April 18, 2014. With this episode of ANTS, I decided to spotlight some of Ed and Andy’s early solo material as well as their rarer Plaid work. Many of these selections have never been released digitally.
Chill Backlog is a quarterly series showcasing new music of the softer, moodier variety. This is the third installment. Tunes by Rose Modular, Nenado, Mast, Visionist, Silkersoft, Sevendeaths, Kyson, Yclept Insan, Vaghe Stelle, Maxi Mill, Gora Sou, WhoMadeWho, and William Kouam Djoko. Label roll call: Noumenal Loom, Astro:Dynamics, Alpha Pup, Apothecary Compositions, LuckyMe, Darup Associates, Holy Page, and Voyage Direct.
Globetrotting Australian native DJ/producer Inkswel offers up a wonderfully eclectic guest mix in the 110 BPM range for the 22nd edition of ANTS. Inkswel balances his time between Adelaide, Amsterdam. Melbourne and London. He’s put out music on a who’s who of notable labels including Rebirth, Burek and Rush Hour sub label Boogie Bash. He founded Hot Shots Sounds last year, complete with distribution under PPU. And it turns out he’s one hell of a DJ, as you can learn from this podcast and other mixes he’s done for big name entities like Juno Plus and AIAIAI (just to name a few). Massive props to Inkswel for squeezing in time to record this just days before his daughter was born! (Congrats!)
